When Is Thanksgiving in Canada? 2026 Date and Long Weekend Guide

A friend of mine moved from Pune to Toronto for her master's degree. That first October, a classmate invited her home for Thanksgiving dinner, and she called me, confused. "Isn't Thanksgiving in November?" she asked. "And why is dinner on Sunday when the holiday is on Monday?"

Fair questions. Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on its own date, for its own reasons, and at its own relaxed pace. Here's what you need to know, from the date and the stat holiday rules to what to bring if someone invites you to dinner.

Thanksgiving in Canada is on Monday, October 12, 2026.

It always falls on the second Monday in October. In most provinces that means a three-day long weekend, from Saturday, October 10 to Monday, October 12.

Canadian Thanksgiving Dates: 2026 to 2030

Here's when Thanksgiving falls over the next five years, along with the long weekend around it:

YearThanksgiving MondayLong weekend
2026October 12Saturday, October 10 to Monday, October 12
2027October 11Saturday, October 9 to Monday, October 11
2028October 9Saturday, October 7 to Monday, October 9
2029October 8Saturday, October 6 to Monday, October 8
2030October 14Saturday, October 12 to Monday, October 14

The earliest it can be is October 8, and the latest is October 14. It lands on October 8 in 2029 and on October 14 in 2030.

A fun fact for your next trivia night: Canadian Thanksgiving is always on the same day as Columbus Day in the United States, which some US states now mark as Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Is Thanksgiving a Stat Holiday in Canada?

In most of the country, yes. But not everywhere. Here's the full list:

Province or territoryStat holiday?
AlbertaYes
British ColumbiaYes
ManitobaYes
New BrunswickNo, optional
Newfoundland and LabradorNo, optional
Northwest TerritoriesYes
Nova ScotiaNo, optional
NunavutYes
OntarioYes
Prince Edward IslandNo, optional
QuebecYes
SaskatchewanYes
YukonYes
Federally regulated jobs (banks, airlines, Canada Post and others)Yes

So in the four Atlantic provinces, employers don't have to give a paid day off. Federal offices there still close, and many businesses do too. Nova Scotia is a funny case: most stores there must close on Thanksgiving by law, even though it isn't a paid stat holiday.

Where it is a stat holiday, most employees get the day off with pay, or extra pay if they have to work. Who qualifies, and how the pay is worked out, is different in each province. If you're not sure, check your province's employment standards website.

Why Is Canadian Thanksgiving in October?

The short answer is the harvest. Canada sits further north than most of the US, so crops are usually brought in earlier. Giving thanks for the harvest in October simply fits the Canadian year.

The longer answer goes back more than 400 years, and it has nothing to do with the Pilgrims:

WhenWhat happened
Before Europeans arrivedFirst Nations held feasts to celebrate the fall harvest.
1578English explorer Martin Frobisher and his crew held a service of thanks in Frobisher Bay, in what is now Nunavut, after surviving storms in the Arctic. Their meal reportedly included salt beef, biscuits and mushy peas.
1606Samuel de Champlain started the Order of Good Cheer at Port Royal, a series of feasts for the French settlers. Mi'kmaq families were invited too.
1872Canada held its first national day of thanks after Confederation, on April 5, to celebrate the Prince of Wales recovering from a serious illness.
1921 to 1930Thanksgiving was held together with Armistice Day, on the Monday of the week of November 11.
1931November 11 became Remembrance Day on its own, and Thanksgiving was usually held in October after that.
1957A proclamation on January 31 fixed the date for good: the second Monday in October.

The 1957 proclamation called it "a day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed." Today, most Canadians simply see it as a weekend for family, food and saying thank you.

How Canadians Spend the Long Weekend

Dinner Is Often on Sunday

Back to my friend's second question. In Canada, the big dinner can be on Saturday, Sunday or Monday. Sunday is the most common choice, because it leaves Monday free for the drive home, a long walk and leftovers.

That's exactly how her classmate's family did it. Dinner was on Sunday at four, with three generations around one table. On Monday they walked through a park full of red and orange maples, ate turkey sandwiches for lunch, and her classmate's dad watched the football game "for five minutes" that somehow lasted three hours.

The Food

The menu will look familiar if you know the American version: roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie to finish. Some families serve ham or roast beef instead, and regional dishes show up too, like Jiggs dinner in Newfoundland, a boiled dinner of salt beef and vegetables.

Cooking the turkey yourself? Canadian advice is a little different from what you'll read on American websites. The Turkey Farmers of Canada suggest thawing it in the fridge for about 10 hours per kilogram, so a 7 kg bird needs close to 3 days. Health Canada recommends cooking a whole turkey to 82°C (180°F), and stuffing to 74°C (165°F).

Football, a Parade and Closing the Cottage

  • Football: The CFL plays its Thanksgiving Day Classic on Monday afternoon. In recent years, the Montreal Alouettes have hosted the Ottawa Redblacks.
  • The Oktoberfest parade: Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, holds the only major parade on Canadian Thanksgiving, as part of its Oktoberfest festival. CTV shows it across the country.
  • Closing the cottage: For many families, Thanksgiving weekend is the last trip of the year to the cottage, to drain the pipes and pull in the dock before winter.
  • Fall colours: Hikes and drives to see the changing leaves are a weekend favourite in many parts of the country.

Thanksgiving in Quebec

In Quebec, the holiday is called l'Action de grâce. It's a stat holiday there too, but the big family dinner is a much smaller tradition than in the rest of Canada. For many Quebecers, it's mostly a welcome long weekend.

Invited to Your First Canadian Thanksgiving?

For newcomers, a Thanksgiving invitation is a big deal. It usually means you've been welcomed into someone's family for the day. Here's what helped my friend feel at ease:

  1. Reply quickly and ask what time to arrive. On time is good. Early is not, because the host is still cooking.
  2. Ask, "Can I bring anything?" If the answer is "just yourself," bring a small gift anyway: flowers, chocolates, a dessert, or a bottle of wine if your hosts drink.
  3. Mention food needs early. If you're vegetarian, eat halal or have an allergy, say so a few days ahead, and offer to bring a dish you can eat and share.
  4. Take small portions first. There are usually lots of dishes, and everyone will want you to try theirs.
  5. Be ready to say what you're thankful for. Many families go around the table. One honest sentence is perfect.
  6. Offer to help clear up, and if the host sends you home with leftovers, say yes.

My friend is vegetarian, so she told her host a week ahead. The host made a mushroom gravy and baked some of the stuffing in a separate dish with vegetable broth. My friend brought a box of kaju katli to share, and it was gone before the pumpkin pie. These days she hosts her own Thanksgiving every October, with a turkey for her Canadian friends and paneer tikka for everyone else.

Canadian vs American Thanksgiving: What's Different?

The two holidays share a name and a menu, but not much else. Here's a side-by-side look:

Canadian Thanksgiving always comes exactly 45 days before the American one. With family on both sides of the border, that means two turkey dinners about six weeks apart. Our guide to Thanksgiving in the USA covers the American date, history and traditions.
