How US holiday dates are set
Fixed dates and Monday holidays
Five federal holidays keep the same date every year: New Year's Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Veterans Day and Christmas Day. Five more are tied to a Monday, so they always make a three-day weekend: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day. Thanksgiving is the only Thursday holiday.
When a holiday lands on a weekend
For most federal workers, a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after. This is why the number of weekday days off changes from year to year, from 10 in some years to 12 in others. A Saturday New Year's Day is the odd one: its day off falls on December 31 of the year before.
Months with no federal holiday
March, April and August never have a federal holiday. If you plan time off in those months, you will need to use your own leave or a state holiday where you live.
Religious dates and observances
Each year page also lists the main religious dates (such as Easter, Passover, Hanukkah and Eid) and well known observances (such as Mother's Day and Election Day). These do not close federal offices, but they matter for schools and planning. State holidays are not listed, because each state sets its own; your state government's website has the official list. USA holidays: common questions
How many federal holidays does the United States have?
There are 11 federal holidays, set by federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103): New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Inauguration Day is a 12th holiday every four years, but only for federal employees in the Washington, DC area.
What happens when a federal holiday falls on a weekend?
For most federal workers, a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after. That is why some years have a "New Year's Day (observed)" on December 31 of the year before.
Which federal holidays are always on a Monday?
Five of them: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Columbus Day. Labor Day has always been a Monday. Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, and Columbus Day moved to Mondays under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1971, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day has been a Monday holiday since it was first observed in 1986. That is why all five always make a three-day weekend.
When did Juneteenth become a federal holiday?
Juneteenth National Independence Day became the newest federal holiday when it was signed into law on June 17, 2021. It marks June 19, 1865, when news of the end of slavery reached Galveston, Texas.
What is the difference between a federal holiday and a state holiday?
A federal holiday closes federal offices, the Federal Reserve, and the post office across the country. A state holiday only closes state offices in that state. Examples include Patriots' Day in Massachusetts and Maine, and Cesar Chavez Day in California.
Do private employers have to give federal holidays off?
No. Federal law does not require private companies to close or to pay for holidays. Many employers give some of the federal holidays off, but the list is up to each company, so check your own holiday schedule.
Is Inauguration Day a holiday for everyone?
No. It is a holiday only for federal employees who work in Washington, DC and nearby counties. The next two are January 20, 2029, which falls on a Saturday, and January 20, 2033, which falls on a Thursday.
What is the earliest and latest date for Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, so it falls between November 22 and November 28. From 2026 to 2035 it lands on November 26 in 2026, November 25 in 2027, November 23 in 2028, November 22 in 2029, November 28 in 2030, November 27 in 2031, November 25 in 2032, November 24 in 2033, November 23 in 2034, and November 22 in 2035.
