Is It Presidents' Day or Washington's Birthday?

Both, depending on who you ask. In federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) and on the federal government's own holiday list, the day is called Washington's Birthday. According to the National Archives, neither Congress nor any President has ever changed that name to Presidents' Day.

"Presidents' Day" became widely used after 1971, when the holiday moved to a Monday between the birthdays of Washington (February 22) and Abraham Lincoln (February 12). Many states, schools, businesses and calendars now use it, and some states use the day to honor more than one president. You will also see it written as Presidents Day or President's Day. The federal name is still Washington's Birthday.

Why Presidents' Day Is Never on Washington's Birthday

The third Monday in February can only fall between February 15 and February 21. That means the holiday called Washington's Birthday can never land on February 22. Lincoln's birthday, February 12, is also always outside the range.

Washington Had Two Birthdays

There is a calendar twist too. When George Washington was born in Virginia, Britain and its American colonies still used the old Julian calendar. By that calendar, he was born on February 11, 1731.

In 1752, Britain and the colonies switched to the Gregorian calendar, the one we use today. To catch up with the seasons, 11 days were dropped: people went to bed on September 2, 1752 and woke up on September 14. The start of the year also moved from March 25 to January 1. After the change, Washington's birthday became February 22, 1732, the date we know today. Our leap year guide explains why the calendar needed fixing.
