How Father's Day Began
The idea came from Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. In 1909, after hearing a Mother's Day sermon at Spokane's Central Methodist Church, she thought fathers deserved a day too. Her own father, William Jackson Smart, had raised her and her five younger brothers on his own after their mother died in 1898.
Dodd won the support of the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and the YMCA, and the city held the first Father's Day on June 19, 1910. The idea spread slowly. Father's Day took much longer than Mother's Day to become a national day:
